In 1834, the Brazilian imperial government authorized a series of countermark operations to revalue circulating copper coinage, a response to chronic shortages of small denomination currency across the northern provinces. The Ceará star countermark — applied to existing 40 réis pieces to validate and redenominate them at 20 réis — was one of several provincial countermark programs that differed by symbol and issuing authority. The star device distinguishes Ceará issues from countermarks applied in other captaincies, and unambiguous attribution depends entirely on that punch.
