| Obverse description | The Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield bearing the traditional quintas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and a bordure of castles — occupies the central field. The royal crown surmounts the shield, rendered with fine detail. The circular legend reading MARIA II D G PORTUG ET ALG REGINA runs around the periphery, identifying the issuing sovereign as Queen Maria II of Portugal and the Algarves by the Grace of God. The coin's milled edge is visible at the rim. |
