The Azorean copper coinage of Maria II existed because the islands operated under a distinct monetary arrangement from mainland Portugal — shipping specie across the Atlantic was expensive and unreliable enough that local issues remained a practical necessity well into the nineteenth century. This 20 Réis piece was struck in 1843, late in Maria's reign, a period when her government was consolidating authority after the devastating Liberal Wars that had ended only a decade earlier.
