Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms occupies the centre of the field, surmounted by a royal crown. The composite shield features an inner escutcheon bearing five smaller shields arranged in cruciform, each charged with five pellets (quinas), surrounded by an outer border containing seven castles. Decorative scrollwork flanks the shield on either side. A continuous legend in Latin encircles the entire design.
