This is a pattern issue from the period when João, Prince Regent, was governing from Rio de Janeiro in exile following Napoleon's invasion of Portugal in 1807. The Braganza court would not return to Lisbon until 1821, and the coinage of this period reflects the administrative awkwardness of a European monarchy operating from Brazil. The Gomes reference JR.E2.01 places this among the earliest documented pattern experiments for the réis denomination under the regency — pieces struck for approval that never reached circulation.
