Obverse description Obverse of the host coin, a X Reis issued under João V, displaying the Portuguese royal arms — a crowned shield bearing the quinas (five escutcheons) — at center, surrounded by a beaded inner border. The date of the host coin (here 1735) appears in the lower field beneath the shield. A circular Latin legend runs along the periphery reading IOANNES V D G PORT ET ALG REX, identifying João V as King of Portugal and the Algarves. Applied over the host coin's obverse field is the Prince Regent João's countermark, consisting of a crowned Portuguese shield, punched to revalue and validate the coin for continued circulation as 20 Réis from 1809 onward.
