Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of King Carlos I of Portugal in right-facing profile, rendered in high relief with naturalistic detail to the hair and facial features. The truncation of the bust is plain. A continuous beaded border frames the design. The circumferential legend reads CARLOS I REI DE PORTUGAL, with the engraver's signature V.ALVES and the date 1903 appearing in the lower portion of the field flanking the bust.

Reverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, featuring the quartered shield with the traditional quinas and bordure of castles, is centrally displayed and surmounted by the royal crown with cross finial. Flanking the shield are decorative sprays of olive branch to the left and oak branch to the right, tied at the base. A beaded border encircles the entire composition. The denomination legend 20 REIS is inscribed in large characters along the lower arc of the coin.
