| Description du revers | The quartered royal arms of Spain occupy the central field, displaying castles of Castile and lions of León in the four quarters, with an inescutcheon bearing the fleurs-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty at the centre. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown. Flanking the arms on either side stand the Pillars of Hercules, each entwined with a scroll bearing the motto PLUS VLTRA. The mint mark B and assayer initials SP appear at lower left and right respectively, with the denomination 20 RS. inscribed in the lower field. A circular legend arcs around the upper periphery within a reeded rim. |

This issue falls within the turbulent constitutional period known as the Trienio Liberal, when Fernando VII was forced by military revolt to reinstate the 1812 Constitution he had abolished in 1814. The "Large Legend" variant reflects transitional die adjustments made during this politically unstable window — the Madrid mint was operating under a government the king was actively working to undermine through appeals to the Holy Alliance powers of Europe.
French intervention came in April 1823, ending the constitutional government within months. Coins struck in the final weeks before the Bourbon restoration are difficult to attribute with precision to either political authority.
