| Obverse description | Bare-headed, unadorned bust of King Fernando VII facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair swept back from the forehead, occupying the central field. The effigy is truncated at the neck and set against a flat, unadorned field. A large circular legend in Latin surrounds the portrait, with the mint date 1823 placed in the lower exergual area between two raised dots. The rim is defined by a continuous reeded border. |

| Reverse description | The quartered royal arms of Spain occupy the central field, displaying castles of Castile and lions of León in the four quarters, with an inescutcheon bearing the fleurs-de-lis of the Bourbon dynasty at the centre. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown. Flanking the arms on either side stand the Pillars of Hercules, each entwined with a scroll bearing the motto PLUS VLTRA. The mint mark B and assayer initials SP appear at lower left and right respectively, with the denomination 20 RS. inscribed in the lower field. A circular legend arcs around the upper periphery within a reeded rim. |
