Issued the year after Senna's death at Imola on May 1, 1994, this commemorative was part of Brazil's broader national mourning that saw the government declare three days of official grief — an honor previously reserved for heads of state. The Banco Central do Brasil authorized the gold issue almost immediately after his death, making it one of the faster official memorial coinages in Brazilian numismatic history.
