The Big Five Series II follows South Africa's original Big Five bullion program, which launched in 2019 and was among the first platinum bullion series globally to feature all five animals across successive annual releases. The Leopard is the most elusive of the five in the wild — and historically the least represented on South African coinage — making its selection for this slot a deliberate corrective after the first series prioritized the Lion as its opening release.
South Africa holds the world's largest known platinum reserves, estimated at roughly 70% of global supply, concentrated in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in Limpopo.
