Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a striking split-face composition in which the head of an African Cape Buffalo is depicted as two mirrored halves viewed from the front, with the animal's characteristic massive boss and sweeping horns prominently rendered across the central field. A central medallion, set within the curve of the horn boss, bears the circular legend 'TWENTY RAND' around its upper arc and 'Pt 999.5' around its lower arc, with '1oz' displayed in the centre of the medallion field. The upper field features a textured background suggestive of the animal's natural habitat, rendered in fine detail against the mirror-polished proof surface.

Aanvullende informatie

The Big Five Series II follows South Africa's long-running strategy of issuing successive platinum bullion programs to compete with the Krugerrand's dominance in gold. Platinum from South Africa is no minor footnote — the country holds roughly 70% of global platinum reserves, and the Mint has leveraged that position aggressively since the late 1980s to establish Pretoria as the default source for investment-grade platinum coin issues.

The buffalo chosen here is the Cape buffalo, not any of the domesticated variants — a distinction the Mint has been careful to maintain across the series.
