Waterlow & Sons held Guatemala's banknote contract through most of the 1930s and into the war years, printing this series as the Banco Central consolidated its position as the republic's sole note-issuing authority — a status formally secured by the 1926 monetary reform that abolished the old commercial bank concessions. The second print designation distinguishes it from the earlier Waterlow run, though the two share the same Pick number, which causes persistent confusion in auction records.
Waterlow's reputation collapsed spectacularly in 1932 after the Artur Virgílio Alves Reis Portuguese escudo forgery scandal, yet major Latin American clients including Guatemala continued placing contracts with the firm through the following decade.
