| Obverse description | Central device features the national emblem of Sudan: a secretary bird with outstretched wings displayed, standing on a plain shield bearing a traditional Sudanese drum. A scroll beneath the shield bears the Arabic legend naming the Democratic Republic of Sudan. Above the bird, a ribbon inscribed in Arabic reads 'Sudan'. The Gregorian year 1985 appears to the lower left of the emblem and the Hijri year 1405 to the lower right, both rendered in Eastern Arabic numerals.
