The CAI in this coin's name refers to the Cairo Anniversary Issue series struck to commemorate the city's millennial founding, traditionally dated to 969 AD when the Fatimid general Jawhar al-Siqilli established al-Qahira as the new imperial capital. Egypt produced a run of these commemorative circulation pieces through the 1980s, tying everyday coinage to a nationalist cultural program that the Mubarak government was actively promoting in its early years.
