| Obverse description | Central raised circle contains the elaborately rendered calligraphic toughra of the Mahdi state's Khalifa Abdullah, rendered in flowing Arabic script with foliate finials above. The annular field between the inner circle and the outer border is decorated with a continuous chain of double crescent-shaped ornaments linked by rosette studs, creating a distinctive decorative ring. The regnal year in Arabic numerals appears within the design, referencing the year of the Khalifa's reign. The outermost border features a reeded or granulated rim. The overall composition follows the Ottoman-influenced coin design tradition adapted for Mahdist Sudan. |
