Albania's 1964 aluminum coinage series was issued under Enver Hoxha's government shortly after the country's dramatic break with the Soviet Union in 1961, which left Albanian industry isolated and dependent on Chinese economic support. The choice of aluminum reflects both the material poverty of the period and Albania's domestic metal processing capabilities rather than any minting preference.
The qindarka denominations saw continuous production through the 1960s with minimal design revision — functional coinage for a command economy where hoarding was actively discouraged.
