The Turner £20 entered circulation on 20 February 2020, replacing the paper Adam Smith issue that had been running since 2007. It was the first polymer £20 in the Bank of England's history — the £5 (Churchill) and £10 (Austen) had already made the transition, so by the time this note arrived the format was established and public resistance largely spent.
De La Rue has printed Bank of England notes since the 19th century, though the polymer substrate itself originates from Guardian technology developed in Australia. The upper date boundary of 2023 reflects the withdrawal deadline following Charles III's accession, after which the Elizabeth II series ceased to be legal tender.
