Additional information

The Battle of the Atlantic ran from 1939 to 1945 — the longest continuous military campaign of the Second World War — and Gibraltar's role was far from peripheral. The Rock served as the western anchor of Allied convoy control, with its naval base coordinating escort movements through the Strait as U-boat wolf packs pressed hard on the supply lines connecting Britain to North America. Over 3,500 merchant vessels were lost during the campaign.

Gibraltar has issued commemoratives under the Elizabeth II series prolifically since the 1990s, with KM numbers now well into four figures.
