Additional information

Alderney, a dependency of Guernsey with a population under 2,000, has no independent monetary authority but has issued legal tender collector coinage under Crown dependency arrangements since the 1990s. The St. George and the Dragon design used here descends directly from Benedetto Pistrucci's 1817 original, still in use on British gold sovereigns — making this one of the longest-continuously-used coin designs in Western minting history. Pistrucci, an Italian gem engraver, was reportedly so offended when asked to copy another artist's portrait that he refused to engrave Wellington's likeness for the Waterloo Medal, a commission he technically held for over 30 years without completing.
