| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents an allegorical composition depicting the sea god Triton, shown as a figure blowing a conch shell trumpet, heralding the emergence of Aphrodite from the sea, referencing the mythological birth of the goddess on the shores of Cyprus. A map of Cyprus is incorporated into the design. Encircling the central motif is a ring of twelve stars symbolising the European Union, referencing Cyprus's accession in 2004. The face value £20 appears to the left within the composition. |

Cyprus joined the EU on 1 May 2004 alongside nine other countries in the largest single enlargement in the bloc's history — though the accession was legally complicated from the start. The Republic of Cyprus joined as the government of the whole island, yet the northern third remained under Turkish military control and outside the effective reach of Cypriot or EU law. Brussels suspended the application of the EU acquis in the north indefinitely, making Cyprus the only member state with a portion of its territory in a legal limbo that persists to this day.
The coin was struck in 22-karat gold at a moment when Cyprus still used the pound; euro adoption wouldn't follow until 2008.
