Obverse description Central vignette composed of two architectural intaglio views: King's College, Aberdeen at left and Glasgow Cathedral at right, separated by a large guilloche rosette in the centre. The denomination TWENTY POUNDS is printed in bold letterpress over the vignette, with the place of issue GLASGOW and date printed above. Serial numbers appear in red at upper left and upper right, with the bank title across the top and a manuscript signature of the General Manager below the vignette.

Reverse description The reverse is dominated by a centrally placed intaglio vignette of the bank's heraldic arms within a circular guilloche border, supported by two figures and inscribed with the motto LITORE AD LITUS on a ribbon below and FIDELITY INDUSTRY above. The denomination £20 appears in large bold numerals at the lower left and right corners, flanked by symmetrical decorative guilloche panels. The bank title runs across the top of the note.
