Bank of Ireland (UK) plc is a separate legal entity from the Dublin-based Bank of Ireland, operating under UK banking regulation and issuing its own sterling notes for circulation in Northern Ireland. This note was part of the first polymer issue for the series, De La Rue having produced it at their Gateshead facility — the same plant responsible for a significant portion of Northern Ireland's commercial bank notes over the preceding decades.
Northern Irish banknotes are legal currency but not legal tender anywhere in the United Kingdom, a distinction that continues to cause practical friction at retail in Great Britain despite their full legal validity.
