Sudan's 2011 independence referendum — which resulted in South Sudan's secession — forced an immediate renegotiation of the country's currency arrangements. The north retained the Sudanese pound, but the split severed oil revenue that had underpinned monetary stability, contributing to inflation that would erode the pound's purchasing power sharply through the mid-2010s. This note was issued into that deteriorating environment.

Printed domestically by the Sudan Currency Printing Press, which has handled Khartoum's production since the mid-1990s. The watermark-only security specification is notably sparse for a denomination of this size, reflecting the constraints of in-country production rather than overseas security printers.
