Jersey's £20 was introduced as part of a 1989 series update that brought the island's notes into closer visual and security alignment with contemporary UK issues — a practical response to the increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting environment of the late 1980s. De La Rue's involvement was long-standing; the firm had printed Jersey notes for decades by this point, and the relationship reflected the island's preference for continuity over competitive tendering.
Leslie May served as Treasurer of the States from 1987 to 1993, so signed notes narrow the production window considerably within the series run.
