Francis II Rákóczi struck these copper poltura pieces to fund his War of Independence against Habsburg rule, a conflict that had broken out in 1703 when Hungarian nobles and peasants united under his leadership. With no access to silver mines controlled by Vienna, Rákóczi's administration in Transylvania issued overvalued copper coinage to sustain his kuruc armies — a monetary expedient that generated immediate resentment among troops paid in it and merchants who refused it at face value.
The multiple Huszár references reflect genuine die and mint variations across the 1705–1706 production span, with pieces struck at Körmöcbánya under Rákóczi's temporary occupation of the facility.
