The pive is a complementary currency operating in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France, taking its name from the local Franc-Comtois dialect word for the spruce cone — a nod to the region's dense Jura forests. It functions within a network of participating businesses and associations committed to keeping exchange local, broadly part of the wave of French monnaies locales that gained legal footing after the 2014 ESS law formalized their status.
Printed regionally rather than through a commercial security printer, which is typical for this tier of local currency and means these notes were never designed to resist serious counterfeiting — the circulation model depends on community trust, not forensic deterrence.
