The United Nations designated 2005 as the International Year of Microcredit, and the BSP issued this commemorative 20 Piso a year ahead of that anniversary — a Philippine habit of early issue that occasionally trips up collectors trying to pin down occasion-specific notes by face date alone. Microcredit had particular resonance in the Philippines, where rural banking penetration was still deeply uneven and the BSP's own microfinance policy framework had only been formalized in 2000.
The Security Plant Complex in Quezon City, which has produced Philippine banknotes since 1978, handled the full production run — one of the relatively few countries maintaining genuine end-to-end domestic currency printing.
