Breslau's municipal tramway system issued notgeld in pfennig denominations during the hyperinflation spiral of 1922, when coin shortages made small-change tokens a practical necessity for fare collection. Städtische Straßenbahn Breslau was not alone in this — transport operators across Weimar Germany issued their own emergency currency rather than grind operations to a halt waiting for the Reichsbank to supply adequate coinage.
Graß, Barth & Comp. W. Friedrich was a long-established Breslau printing house, which meant production stayed entirely local — unusual only in how unremarkable it was for Silesian municipal notgeld of this period.
