Sandow, a small industrial settlement near Cottbus in Lower Lusatia, was home to the Steinbock works during the First World War period when zinc notgeld of this type circulated as emergency coinage. Private firms and municipalities across Germany issued their own metal tokens when the wartime metal requisitions and coin hoarding stripped everyday commerce of usable small change. Paul Steinbock's issues served the immediate payroll and canteen economy of his operation, rarely traveling far beyond the factory gate.
