Gebr. Putzler was a glassworks operation in Penzig, a small Silesian town now known as Pieńsk in southwestern Poland. This token belongs to the vast wave of private emergency currency — Notgeld — issued by German industrial firms during the acute coin shortages of World War I, when zinc and other metals were being pulled from civilian coinage for military use. Factory-issued Notgeld of this type circulated among workers as wage scrip, redeemable at company stores or local merchants with whom the firm had arrangements.
