Additional information

Freyung, a small market town in the Bavarian Forest near the Austrian border, produced a wave of emergency coinage in 1918 as the German imperial economy buckled under wartime metal requisitions. Alois Mader — almost certainly a local merchant or tradesman — issued this iron notgeld to keep small transactions moving when federal coinage had all but vanished from circulation. Iron was the material of necessity; copper and nickel had been redirected to the war effort years earlier.
