Obverse description Central cartouche in the form of a heraldic shield bearing the figure of an armored warrior, flanked by two shield-supporters. The city name STADT ZWIESEL is divided by the central device, with the date 1918 appearing above. The patriotic slogans EISERNE FRONT and EISERNE HEIMAT ('Iron Front, Iron Homeland') are inscribed in the legend, reflecting the wartime Notgeld context. The overall design is rendered in a bold, low-relief style typical of World War I German emergency coinage.

Additional information

Zwiesel's 1918 notgeld issue belongs to the first wave of German municipal emergency coinage, prompted by the wartime hoarding of copper and nickel that stripped small denominations from everyday commerce. The Imperial government had authorized municipalities to plug the gap, and hundreds of small towns obliged. Zwiesel, a glassmaking town in the Bavarian Forest, was among them.

Zinc was the material of necessity — unglamorous, prone to oxidation, and never intended to outlast the emergency.
