Schlitz is a small town in Hesse whose medieval castle complex — the Schloss Schlitz — remained in the hands of the Counts of Schlitz genannt von Görtz well into the twentieth century. This token was issued by the estate administration (Burggüter Verwaltung) to facilitate transactions among workers and tenants tied to the castle properties, a private scrip arrangement common to large German landed estates during the inflationary instability of the early Weimar period. Such pieces rarely left the estate economy that produced them.
