Rothenbach im Schlesien (now Rybnik-Chwałowice, Poland) was a significant coal extraction district during the First World War, and private mine operators routinely issued small-denomination emergency scrip when Imperial coinage disappeared from circulation after 1916. This note is a product of that specific shortage — Reichsmünzen were being hoarded and melted, and collieries needed a functional wage-payment medium for their workers.
Square-format Notgeld of this type was produced in large quantities by Silesian industrial issuers in 1917, but survivorship is uneven. Mine scrip was redeemed and discarded rather than saved, making intact examples less common than their original print runs suggest.
