Additional information

Rastatt's 1917 zinc notgeld issue was one of thousands of municipal emergency coinages authorized after the imperial government's wartime metal requisitions stripped copper and nickel from normal small-change production. Zinc was the compromise — cheap, abundant, deeply unpopular with the public for its tendency to corrode and crack at the edges. Many examples from German municipal issues of this period survived only because they were hoarded out of curiosity rather than spent.
