Obverse description Octagonal zinc notgeld token with a beaded outer rim following the shape of the flan. The city name STADT NEUSTADT A/D HDT. arcs around the upper portion of the field, with the date 1917 flanked by four-pointed stars positioned below, all surrounding a central pearl circle enclosing the municipal coat of arms in relief. The overall design is flat and utilitarian, typical of First World War German emergency small change issues.

Reverse description Octagonal reverse displaying a beaded outer rim conforming to the coin's shape, with the legend KLEINGELDERSATZMARKE (small change substitute token) arranged around the periphery. A rope or cable circle frames the central field, within which the large numeral 20, denoting the denomination in Pfennig, is prominently struck in bold relief. Three small stars are positioned at the base of the legend below the rope circle, adding decorative punctuation to the spare, functional design.
