Consum-Verein Vorwärts — "Forward Consumer Cooperative" — was a workers' cooperative retail society, and its decision to issue its own emergency scrip in 1920 reflects just how badly small-denomination coinage had collapsed in postwar Germany. The Weimar government's coin shortage was acute enough that cooperatives, factories, and municipalities across Saxony printed their own Notgeld rather than wait for federal supply to recover.
The square format is unusual even within the crowded Notgeld field, where most issuers defaulted to rectangular slips.
