Hanomag's Linden plant issued zinc notgeld tokens during the early 1920s to address the chronic shortage of small change that plagued German industry in the inflation years — workers needed something to make change in the factory canteen and company store when the Reichsbank simply couldn't keep up with demand. Zinc was the material of necessity, not preference; copper and nickel had been commandeered for the war effort years earlier and supplies remained disrupted long after 1918.
The Menzel reference numbers indicate this piece is catalogued across both major notgeld editions, suggesting it circulated widely enough within the Hanomag works to generate surviving specimens in sufficient quantity for serious study.
