Kriegsküchen — literally "war kitchens" — were municipally organized soup kitchens established across German cities from 1916 onward as the Allied naval blockade drove civilian food shortages to crisis levels. Haniel & Lueg was a major Düsseldorf industrial firm, and like many large employers, it operated its own facility to feed workers who could no longer source adequate meals independently. This token represents internal scrip for that system, not a civic issue.
Zinc was used because copper and nickel had been requisitioned for war production by 1916.
