The Bremer Lagerhaus-Gesellschaft, founded in 1877, operated the major bonded warehouses and free-port storage facilities along Bremen's harbor. During and immediately after World War I, the Reich's requisitioning of metals gutted the small-change supply across Germany, pushing hundreds of industrial firms, municipalities, and transit operators to issue their own iron or zinc notgeld tokens simply to make payroll and canteen transactions function.
