Remda is a small town in Thuringia — population in the early 1920s measured in the hundreds — and its decision to issue notgeld in 1921 was less a banking exercise than a practical response to the chronic small-coin shortage that plagued postwar Germany before hyperinflation overtook the problem entirely. J. Adolf Schwarz in Lindenberg im Allgäu printed notgeld for dozens of similarly obscure municipalities across the country during this period, functioning essentially as a cottage industry serving local administrations that had no other means of making change.

Remda itself was absorbed into the municipality of Remda-Teichel in 2019, making any surviving civic documentation from the early Weimar years correspondingly rare.
