The central dark-ground vignette, executed in a bold expressionist woodcut manner, presents a scene of early Germanic settlement dated '1250': figures in period dress are shown clearing land and ploughing with an ox, set against a wooded landscape with a pale oval sky. Below the vignette, in white Gothic lettering on the dark surround, runs the caption 'Beginn der Kultur durch deutsche Kolonisten.' The left and right borders carry the denomination 'Zwanzig Pfennig' in large red Gothic script, each flanked by stylised autumn oak-leaf ornaments in ochre and red. |
