The overprint series issued by the Bureau of the Treasury, Philippine Islands represents the colonial administration's stopgap solution after the 1903 Philippine Coinage Act established the new peso tied to gold at exactly half the dollar's value. Rather than commission entirely new plates, existing Silver Certificate-style designs were overprinted for Philippine circulation — a cost-efficient decision that also signaled the transitional nature of American monetary administration in the islands during those early years of territorial governance.
BEP-produced Philippine notes from this period are prone to foxing and edge toning due to the tropical storage conditions they endured, making clean examples genuinely harder to source than their American counterparts.
