The Falkland Islands switched to polymer banknotes years ago, but circulating polymer coins remain a genuine curiosity — this piece is among a small cohort of plastic-composition coins issued by British Overseas Territories, where the format has been tested partly for durability in harsh maritime climates. The striated caracara, known locally as the Johnny Rook, is one of the world's rarest raptors and endemic to the Falklands and a handful of southern Atlantic islands.
Early European visitors documented the bird's extraordinary boldness around humans — sailors reported them stealing tools and clothing directly from their hands.
