Struck as an essay piece during Mexico's late-1970s push to develop culturally themed coinage, this uniface pattern was never adopted for circulation. The ball player motif drew on the ancient Mesoamerican ballgame — a ritual sport documented across hundreds of pre-Columbian sites — which the Casa de Moneda explored alongside other indigenous subjects during this period as candidates for the 1980 circulation series. Most patterns from this program exist in very small quantities, produced solely for internal evaluation by mint officials.
