This is a pattern piece from Casa de Moneda de México's 1980 experimental series exploring ancient Mesoamerican imagery for a proposed 20 Peso circulation coinage. Uniface patterns like this one were produced to evaluate die work and planchet composition before committing to full production tooling — the reverse left blank deliberately, not as an error. The brass composition was one of several alloys tested that year as Mexico's monetary authorities weighed cost and durability against the existing cupro-nickel issues.
The ball player subject derives from the pre-Columbian ulama tradition, a game with ritual and sometimes fatal stakes among the Maya and Aztec. Krause-Mishler lists this as PL#51A, distinguishing it from related pattern variants struck in different metals the same year.
