This is a pattern strike from the Casa de Moneda's 1978 design trials for the 20 pesos denomination, catalogued under Poliquin as PL#49B. The Coyolxauhqui designs emerged directly from the extraordinary archaeological moment of February 1978, when electrical workers digging near the Zócalo in Mexico City accidentally unearthed the massive monolithic disk depicting the dismembered moon goddess — triggering both the excavation of the Templo Mayor and an immediate institutional impulse to translate the discovery onto coinage. The bronze composition of this specific trial was not selected for circulation.
