Obverse description The obverse features the Mexican national coat of arms rendered in relief within the nickel brass centre: a Mexican golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) perched on a prickly pear cactus atop a rocky outcrop rising from a lake, with wings partially spread and head turned to the left as it grasps a serpent in its beak and talons. An ornamental wreath of oak and laurel branches frames the lower portion of the design in the aluminium bronze ring. The circular legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs along the upper periphery of the ring in incuse Latin lettering.

Reverse description The reverse presents a striking bilateral composition within the nickel brass centre: the facing heads of two raptors positioned side by side — the Mexican golden eagle (Águila Real) on the left and the American bald eagle (Águila Calva) on the right — their beaks nearly touching at centre, symbolising the bond between the two nations. A small decorative cartouche appears between the eagles at the top of the centre disc. The denomination $20 is boldly inscribed at the bottom of the centre field, flanked by the commemorative dates 1822 and 2022. Along the lower sides of the ring, the species identifications ÁGUILA REAL and ÁGUILA CALVA appear in incuse lettering at left and right respectively, while the Mexico City mint mark Mo is visible at the right of the ring. The upper arc of the ring carries the primary legend DOSCIENTOS AÑOS DE RELACIONES DIPLOMÁTICAS in two lines, followed by ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS - ESTADOS UNIDOS DE AMÉRICA, with the motto AMISTAD, SOBERANÍA Y COOPERACIÓN inscribed in a smaller line below.

Additional information

Issued as part of Banco de México's ongoing bimetallic commemorative 20 Pesos program, this piece marks the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States — a pairing that has generated political friction at nearly every decade since the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ceded roughly half of Mexico's territory to its northern neighbor. The commemorative series itself dates to 1993, timed to coincide with NAFTA negotiations.

KM# 770 is a recent addition to a long-running catalog of types in this format, most of which see limited circulation and migrate quickly into collector holdings.
