This piece was released to mark the 700th anniversary of the founding of Tenochtitlan in 1321 by the Mexica people, who according to tradition established their settlement on a small island in Lake Texcoco after witnessing the omen prophesied by Huitzilopochtli — an eagle perched on a cactus devouring a serpent. The city grew into one of the largest urban centers in the pre-Columbian world, with a population that likely exceeded 200,000 by the time Cortés arrived in 1519.
The 20-peso bimetallic series has been Mexico's primary vehicle for commemorative circulation coinage since the mid-1990s, with KM#996 joining a long sequence of nationally significant subjects in that format.
